Driscoll Genealogy Search

The intent in this section is to post queries from individuals searching for ancestral connections and allow their questions to be answered directly to them. Forgive me as I evolve this feature as I am trying to learn how to use a "guestbook-type" coding to have questions post directly to the site.

In the meantime, while I get my little brain around all this coding stuff - I thought that I could do it manually for a while since the number of our visitors to the site is still small.

This is what I am proposing: In the body of your e-mail send your name, your e-mail address (yes, repeat it in the body just to be safe) and your question to this site page and I will post the questions as they come in.

If you are answering a question SEND YOUR RESPONSE DIRECTLY TO THE PERSON RESEARCHING, not to me, or I will soon become overwhelmed and will not be able to find time to figure out how to do it automatically. Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi I have just started researching the Driskell's. I am fascinated with the history. My gr-gr-grandfather lived in London, England. His name I believe is Elms Driskell. He had two sons, one being James Elms Driskell. James Elms Driskell moved to Ottawa, Canada with his wife and at that time one son. I have no further information on Elms Driskell, I do not even know his wifes name or if he was born in England. He was a seaman. Any help would be appreciated. Cathy

Daren Driskill
July 21, 2003
Howdy from Texas. I've recently gotten started in genealogy and came across your website. I've seen several websites for Driscolls and O'Driscolls but no Driskills. While I'm sure it's the same family at some point, I was just wondering if yall have come across any spelling changes from O'Driscoll to Driskill? Or do you happen to know someone who I could contact? I've hit a roadblock with my great grandfather, James David Driskill. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Webmaster comment: The difference from Driscoll to Driskill is not so much a "change" as it is a variant spelling. Census takers in the early days did not necessarily spell well and often the families they were recording couldn't read or write at all. So, it is not unusual for these variances to occur nor for members of the same family to be recorded with different spellings.

If anyone can help Daren with more specific information, it would no doubt be helpful to others as well.

I have just joined the Baltimore, West Cork web site & thought that I would advise that I have completed an Index to the 1901 Census for the Coastal Civil Parishes of Abbeystrewery, Aughadown, Clear Island (Cape Clear), Creagh, Kilcoe, Kilmoe, Schull & Tullagh. These civil parishes include the towns of Baltimore, Ballydehob, Crookhaven, Golene, Schull, Skibbereen, as well as the islands located near these towns. Although my Heir Island family names are Cahalane & MInihane, the census is chock full of Driscolls/O'Driscolls. If any of your members are interested in purchasing this CD, please visit the shop at www.emara.com, the e-portal to the Southern Islands. Also, for the latest news & information on what is happening in the Islands of West Cork, www.emara.com is the first place your members should visit. James E. Driscoll February 24, 2003
Greetings from Alexandria, Virginia. I enjoyed browsing through your site. About fourteen of us who are decendents of Timothy O'Driscoll and Mary (McCarthy) O'Driscoll (who departed from Cobh around 1849 for Baltimore, Maryland) plan to attend the O'Driscoll Clan Gathering in June. I am unable to determine just where in Baltimore the registration will take place. Can you identify the spot?
Sorry that we don't have a family site, but I welcome email.

Webmaster comment: The Clan Gathering is a casual affair. Just follow the crowd in the town square or stop into Bushe's Bar and someone there will tell you where the registration is being held. Last time I was there (2001) registration took place down in the yachting club building which can be clearly seen from the top of the hill in front of Bushe's Bar. We'll see you there this year James, as Bruce and I will be returning.

Well hello, you distant relatives.
I'm writing this just after celebrating Ireland's magnificent win over Italy in the Six Nations, with young Brian O'Driscoll leading the side to an eight successive win under his captaincy. My part of the family is based in Kendal, in England's beautiful Lake District, where I moved to marry Joanne, who comes from another ancient Irish clan, the Daleys.
I also have two children living in Winchester, Hampshire and another in Aix en Provence, France. Meanwhile my sister Maggie Driscoll still lives in London, near where our grandfather moved from Cork at the turn of the century.
We visit Baltimore whenever we can and were over there last August. This year, we plan to visit the Clan Gathering for the first time, so hope to meet many more relatives then. A longer term plan is to celebrate my 60th birthday on Sherkin island in May 2012! Just to prove that the sea is still in our blood, I spent 15 years as Principal National Coach to the Royal Yachting Association, and have written several books about sailing!

Re: Catharine Driscoll, b. 1848, St John CAN

I'm researching the Driscoll side of the family on my wife's side. During research I came across a James Driscoll living in Ottawa at that time. I also have seen mumerous enquires on www.roots

You may also look into the city of Ottawa archives as they also have a listing of people in the area at that time. Also the National Archives at 80 Wellington St., Ottawa, and the local branch of the Church of Latter Day Saints as local info. Good luck.

Re: Catharine Driscoll, b. 1848, St John CAN

I'm actually looking for background on a James Driscoll who was married in 1880 in the Ottawa area. At that time his parents were listed as Michael and Bridget and they lived in Hull. I thought there might be some ancestor connection.

Thanks for the info.

My grandfather was Roland Oscar (O')Driscoll . He was born in 1891 on the Isle of Jersey. He married Hazel Alberta Wright on December 29, 1914 at St. Luke's Church, Inverness, Canada. I am looking for any information I can find. His father was Frank Driscoll and his mother Liza Mallett. Thanks for any help.

(Webmaster comment: The most commonly known Inverness in Canada is in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. However, there is also an Inverness in Prince Edward Island and Quebec. Anyone know which one has a St. Luke's church? Hopefully not all three!)

Dave Driscoll December 05, 2002
Hi, Have been enjoying your site. I'm a proud Driscoll descendent of Daniel Driscoll who settled on Talbot Road just outside Windsor Ontario in 1824. The oldest info I have is the death of his first wife Mary Burchell in 1824 and later, the marriage to his second wife Mary Sexton in 1829, which states all parties from Croagh Parish County Limerick. All the records retrieved from Assumption Parish thru the Mormons. I have been able to track most of my family from that point on but became frustrated a couple years ago and put it away. There's speculation from conventional naming of childern that Daniel was from the family of a Micheal Driscoll who was regranted land in Co. Limerick in late 1660's. If anyone has a idea out there it be great to find some connection.
Annette (Driscoll) Janzen September 10, 2002
Hello to all. My name is Annette Janzen nee Driscoll. I was born in Sydney,Australia and now live on beautiful Vancouver Island. My Father was Richard John Driscoll and was an orphan. I believe my Grandmother's name was Bertha and took my Father to an orphanage because they had no food. I believe my Father was shipped to Australia in or around 1925. He tried to find records of his family to no avail. My Mother left my Father and brought me to Canada when I was 5 so my knowlege of dad is limited. I am so excited to have found this site don't know why I never tried before. I would love to attend a Driscoll reunion. I am at work now so must go, will write again soon.
Cheers - Annie

My name is Steve Stuart from Berkely, MI, USA. I'd like to make contact with anyone researching the DRISCOLL or O'DRISCOLL surname from Tor's Cove, Newfoundland and environs. I have lots of information, much of it electronically formatted, to share with likeminded researchers. My grandmother, Mary Margaret DRISCOLL was born in Tor's Cove in 1901.

I have traced my great-great grandfather's marriage to the parish of Roscarberry on the 15/2/1857. Patrick Driscoll to Johanna Harrington (Paulbeg) Witnesses: James O'Hea and Kate Driscoll. My great-grandfather was baptised Patrick on the 13/2/1858. I've been unable to trace there movements from "Woodfield" to this date but heard a rumour that John may have ended up in Canada but as i say i have no confirmation at this time. It would be great if someone out there is a relative and would be great to hear from you.

My name is Diane O'Donnell. I live in Miramichi, New Brunswick. My grandfather was Joseph Drisdelle (who lived in the Miramichi area), his father being Damien Drisdelle. From what I have heard, their last name was changed from Drysdale or Driscoll to Drisdelle when they moved to New Brunswick. Can you tell me if there would be a connection there?
Marilyn Driscoll Martineau April 01, 2002
My father's name was Breen Frank Driscoll of Halifax, Nova Scotia. His father's name was Martin Driscoll> My father had three brothers named Carmen, John and Terrence(Terry) . This is the only information I have on my father's family. Can anybody give me more insight as to where Martin Driscoll came from? He was married to a Rita Conrad of Tancook Island, Nova Scotia.
Bill Driscoll March 31, 2002
I am looking for information on my grandfather, Absolom Driscoll who I am told, at the age of six, left County Cork with his father for Canada. I was told they settled in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia but that has proven to be incorrect. It may have been Bridgetown but I have not had the opportunity to check this out.
I know that Absolom was born in approximately 1854 and died on 28 January 1919 in St. John's, Newfoundland. He married Virtue Snelgrove from Lower Island Cove, Newfoundland on 11 November 1888.
I am trying to find the names of Absolom's parents, their date and place of birth and if Absolom had any siblings. I would also like to know the exact date of Absolom's birth and the name of the ship that brought them to Canada.
If anyone has any information on this line of the Driscoll's I would appreciate receiving it. Thanks.
Glen O'Driscoll March 27, 2002
I recently completed some research and found this interesting Census website for my local community, Plate Cove East, Newfoundland. You'll notice that the name is Driscoll, common for this area at the time, we are now known as O'Driscoll. Hope this helps others.
Marg & Paul O'Driscoll March 27, 2002
Our names are Marg & Paul O'Driscoll and we live in Conception Harbour, Newfoundland, and there have been O'Driscolls in this Harbour since the 1700's. We have researched our line, to my great, great, grandfather (Bartholomew) and there was a Corneilius showing as owning land here in 1832. We have a B&B here, and have been moved back to the Harbour for 12years or so. Please contact us if you would like to share information on the O'Driscolls in this part of the Newfoundland.
Lorraine Driscoll March 27, 2002
Lorraine's husband's family is from the area of St. John's, Nfld. She would like to hear from anyone who might be able to help her trace the Driscolls in this area.
Lisa O'Driscoll Mackey March 25, 2002

Paul Bryan March 11, 2002
Hi, Here is my question:
3 brothers came from Ireland in the 1850's-60's to the Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada. James is my great great gandfather. He stayed on the Miramichi; the other two went on to Prince Edward Island. He brought his father over later (George, in his old age). I can find out the name of the ship. Get back to me, please if you have any information.
Paul Bryan
son of Mary Driscoll, daughter of John Driscoll, son of James Driscoll, son of George O'Driscoll.
Jean (Driscoll) Sherwood March 3, 2002
I am asking about the Driscoll Clan that originally came from Cork Co. Ireland to Island Cove, Nfld. This is the lineage I am following:
Jean Driscoll, living
Gordon Driscoll b. Jan 19, 1900 d. 1993 married Annie Stacey b. 1902
Caleb Driscoll b. 1875 in Island Cove, Nfld,. married Regina Payne of Fogo Island, Nfld.
John Driscoll b. 1844 married Selena
John Driscoll b. 1815 married Elizabeth
John Driskell b. 1795 married Susanna.
I believe that John Driskell b. 1795 could be the first Driskell to arrive in Nfld from Ireland. Do you have anything on this line? Thanks.
